About
A Whole Book Approach Story Time uses visual thinking strategies to create thought-provoking reading experiences that encourage children to talk about often overlooked aspects of art in picture books - such as visual typography, front matter artwork, and end paper design.

Visual Thinking Strategy (VTS) is an inquiry-based teaching method that improves a student's ability to describe, analyze, and interpret imagery and information through observing and discussing visual art.

This critical engagement with picture books establishes interactive story times that emerge as facilitated discussions that empower children too actively participate in learning.



What We'll Do In Class


- We begin each class by exploring the story of the day's unique creative aesthetics.

- During this time, we also gather observations and make predictions about the story of the day based off of clues discovered in the book's artwork and design.

- Then students take turns sharing further observations while answering and asking questions as the story is read aloud.

- Class ends with a review of the observations and predictions discovered at the start of class.

Jessica is a phenomenal storyteller! My little ones can't get enough of the expressive way that she reads. I love that their able to express their thoughts about the story without being made to remain silent. Jessica listens patiently to their every word and responds in a manner that gets my children to think outside of the box.

Whether your child attends the virtual or in-person version of this class, it will teach them how to discover the little treasures found in pictures books that we usually do not pay attention to. I recommend this class for any parent who wants to build their child’s critical thinking skills while also instilling in them a love of reading and appreciation for art.
