Performances and More!

Harvest Moon Picnic - Gather around the picnic table for a make-believe harvest moon picnic at MOCA! Learn about the foods that families share as they admire the moon and give thanks for the year’s harvest. Sketch your own moon-shaped food to add to the picnic.

Over the Moon Gallery Hunt - With a MOCA educator, search high and low to spot sparkling full moons and shimmering stars around the gallery. Will you find them all?

Go Mooncakes for MOCA! - Explore the meaning behind mooncakes and learn how these sweet and savory treats are made! Taste a variety of traditional mooncakes and sip some sweet bubble tea from Taiwan Bear House to go along with it. Don’t forget to take a mooncake recipe to try at home!

Chinese Theatre Works Presents: Chang-Er Flies to the Moon - This original shadow play tells the story of Moon Goddess Chang-Er and her husband, the archer Hou Yi. Through enchanting shadow puppetry and engaging storytelling, watch this legend come to life before your eyes. This program of Chinese Theatre Works is partially funded by New York State Council on the Arts and Department of Cultural Affairs.

Landscape Ink Paintings - Join teaching artists from the New York Chinese Cultural Center and learn how to paint beautiful landscapes—featuring mountains, forests, and more—using an ink brush and various colors of ink.

Sing-along Storytime! - Head to MOCA’s brand-new learning center for an interactive, bilingual story time with MOCA educator and musician Nicole Tan! Through songs and movement, explore the legends behind this treasured holiday.

Drop-In Arts and Crafts

Powerful Potions and Jade Rabbit Charms - Prepare your own version of the magical elixir that lifted Chang-Er from the earth to the moon! Grind salt and glow-in-the-dark chalk to create sparkling, colorful sand. Then, use it to fill a potion bottle that you can wear around your neck. With local artist Joyce Huang, create a jade rabbit charm out of clay to add to your necklace—and prepare to take flight!

Make a Mooncake Print! - Design your own mesmerizing mooncake pattern out of foam shapes. Create dazzling artwork and personalized greeting cards by printing your design in your favorite bright colors!

Light-Up Lanterns (& Riddles!) - Light up the night with your own paper tea light lanterns! Cut cardboard and colorful paper, and add your own designs to personalize your lantern. Then turn on your tea light and stump your family and friends with some mid-autumn lantern riddles!

Shadow Stories - Using colorful acetate, construct and decorate shadow puppets of Moon Goddess Chang-Er and the archer Hou Yi, complete with movable arms and legs. When you finish your creations, head to MOCA’s shadow puppet theater to stage an original performance!

Making Mooncakes - Peek inside a mooncake, and learn about the ingredients and tools used to make it. Then, mold your own play dough mooncake using a real mooncake press.
