WeBop - Hipsters (Adult + Child Ages 8 - 15 Months/Non-walkers) at Jazz at Lincoln Center

About
Jazz at Lincoln Center is dedicated to inspiring and growing audiences for jazz and offers a variety of classes for children and parents.

WeBop is Jazz at Lincoln Center’s award-winning early-childhood jazz education program for children ages eight months to five years, which invites families to stomp, strut, and swing to the joyous rhythms of jazz!

The WeBop curriculum combines early childhood developmentally appropriate practices and jazz pedagogy to provide musically authentic experiences. Like jazz musicians, WeBoppers move freely within a commonly understood structure, an environment that encourages all to participate in an improvisatory spirit, each contributing in their own way to create a unique ensemble.

These 45-minute classes are structured as a child-adult dyad, with participation from both child and adult, and offer a creative outlet for families to explore jazz through movement, songs, storytelling, and play. During Fall, Winter and Spring, WeBop is organized in 8-week terms, and each class is led by an instructor with the support from a piano accompanist, with two band weeks at week 4 and week 8. Classes incorporate both live and recorded music that provide opportunities to explore jazz through movement, songs, storytelling and playing small percussion instruments. In addition to these activities, guest musicians visit the class twice per term (weeks 4 and 8) to introduce families to a live jazz band, reinforcing the repertoire and concepts learned in class. We offer 4 different thematic terms where families will learn about the core concepts, instruments, styles, and great performers of jazz. Summer terms are 4 weeks long.

When to arrive:
15 min before. Arriving before class time is very important, it allows children the opportunity to adapt to a new environment. Additionally, parents can be informed about class dynamics and what to expect in this early childhood jazz class.
Additional details:
This class is for children ages 8 - 15 months only. If a booking is made for a child outside the age range, it will be automatically cancelled. All WeBop classes are child and adult participation classes. WeBop is not a drop-off toddler program. Our music activities are designed to incorporate active participation of both adult and child, allowing for a deepened learning experience through children and caregivers both embodying the concept of the lesson and making music together. Our curriculum is designed to speak both to children and adults, introducing both to the lessons of this uniquely American art form, and encouraging families to take what they’ve learned in class and apply it at home. Because of this, we kindly request that adult attendees remain actively engaged alongside their children, and refrain from using cell phones in class.
