About
During this lesson, children will be exposed to different building materials as they explore homes from different cultures around the world. They will visit an aqal—a portable home still used in contemporary Somalia.
For January: Home Sweet Home
Everyone needs a place to call home, but what that home looks like all depends on the environment in which it’s located. Children will be exposed to different building materials as they explore homes throughout the world, including an aqal from Somalia. Museum Visit: National Museum of American History
For February: Wrap Me Up!
Do you have a special blanket or quilt at home? It could be special because of the colors, the design or the person that gave it to you. We will see an example of a quilt from the National Museum of American History, and have the opportunity to play with fabric and create our own quilt designs. Museum Visit: National Museum of American History
For March: Bones
We all have bones, but what are they for? Through hands-on activities in the classroom and the museum, children will discover why our bones are so important, and observe similarities and differences between our skeletons and those of other creatures. Museum Visit: National Museum of Natural History
For April: Waterfalls
Waterfalls are a sight to behold, but what causes them? We’ll explore some scientific characteristics of waterfalls and play in the process. Class will conclude at the Hirshhorn where we’ll see a collection of artist Pat Steir’s Waterfall paintings. Museum Visit: Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
